Personal Styling: Velvet Day-To-NightNovember 15, 2017
Prized for its plush pile and rich color, Italian velvet jumpstarted the 14th-century Silk Road, eventually becoming the de facto status symbol of Europe’s aristocracy. After a Renaissance revival, the once-fussy fabric reemerged during the Industrial Revolution as it became easier to produce. The following decades would see it all: velvet flapper gowns, velvet disco suits, Madonna’s infamous velvet cone bra, Prince’s fanciest pants, and crushed velvet platforms courtesy of the one and only Scary Spice.
Now, we’re pleased to report, velvet is back—but there’s no need to treat it as a trend. When done right, it’s actually a wear-everywhere, team-player fabric that lends a soft touch to any wardrobe.
“Velvet’s versatile and quite timeless in the right shapes,” says Christina Frederick, our Personal Styling Director. “And I love the way it embodies color—the saturated tones are so elegant and perfect for this time of year.”
With holiday invites on the way, we asked Christina to show off velvet’s versatility with day-to-night outfits using some of our favorite pieces. The result? Velvet looks you’ll love from sun up to sun down, season after season.
THE VELVET JUMPSUIT
As far as velvet jumpsuits go, this one from Kristinit is surprisingly versatile. Not only is it all-day comfortable, notes Christina, but the rich gold hue acts as an unexpected neutral.
DAY: “There’s nothing a denim jacket can’t bring down to earth,” says Christina. Embellished sneakers round out the casual look.
NIGHT: Come evening, it’s time to shine. Christina added crystal statement earrings, a beaded clutch, and, to play up the jumpsuit’s texture, a faux-fur scarf.
THE VELVET BLAZER
Tailored and timeless, Cartonnier’s tuxedo blazer is one of Christina’s staples of the season. With a wink to menswear, it’s a cinch to dress up or down.
DAY: “Paired with denim and a graphic tee, there’s nowhere this blazer can’t go,” notes Christina. A silky scarf ties everything together.
NIGHT: Ready for next-level velvet? Go head-to-toe with Citizens of Humanity’s super-soft skinnies. Add a cami and a statement clutch, and you’re on your way.
THE VELVET TEE
The easiest shape in the most luxurious texture—the velvet tee is the basic we never knew we needed.
DAY: “For a luxe version of an everyday outfit, pair a velvet tee with cords and a cozy cardigan,” says Christina. Here, we love the way wintry whites contrast with deep sapphire.
NIGHT: “For night, I love this tee with sequin joggers—another sporty shape in another unexpected material,” notes Christina. The finishing touch? A faux-fur clutch and satin heels.
