Model Citizen: Catching Up With Carolyn MurphyNovember 29, 2017
Since launching her career more than two decades ago, the model and actress has graced the cover of Vogue seven times, walked every runway from New York to Tokyo, fronted campaigns for the likes of Versace and Tom Ford, and served as the face of Estée Lauder for 17 years and counting. Sports Illustrated, Calvin Klein, Louis Vuitton? Done, done, and done.
So yes, we were a bit starstruck when she arrived to the set of our November lookbook. But soon, we were talking activism, Instagram, and face mists.
Here, Carolyn, 43, shares everything from her hopes for the New Year to the contents of her suitcase.
We’re celebrating 25 years here at Anthropologie by looking forward. What are you most looking forward to in the year ahead?
I’m looking forward to the little things—time with my daughter, creating, traveling, working with animal rights, interior design, and building my brand, Mamma Murphy’s.
What is true friendship to you?
Unconditional love and unconditional reciprocation—someone who nurtures you, inspires you, and loves you for who you are, good and bad.
What’s the most exciting thing about the future? What worries you?
The most exciting thing is that with age comes wisdom, and every day there are new opportunities to make changes and an impact. The most worrying thing is the political and overall human unrest, globally and in our country. And climate change: can we truly rally to save ourselves from the damage done? Stay informed and stay involved—no act is too big or too small.
What do you miss most about the past?
I miss carefree youth and naivety, but I also totally embrace becoming a wise woman.
Where’s your favorite place in the world for rest and relaxation?
Anywhere in nature—I can do the mountains and seaside of Big Sur or the tropical beaches of Costa Rica.
Your dream winter road trip: where would you go and who would you bring?
I love road trips! I’d like to drive through Ireland, Wales, and Scotland with my family so we could retrace our history.
… and what would you pack?
My Alicia Adams Alpaca hat, gloves, and scarf—they keep me warm, and they support a family farm in upstate New York. Plus a good bag—I recently designed a woven leather weekender for Shinola that’s the perfect size for quick getaways. Then sage from Juniper Ridge—I sage any house or hotel room before sleeping there—and Rosewater & Glycerin face mist to keep my skin hydrated.
What’s your favorite book?
I’m an avid reader so it’s hard for me to choose just one, but the first book I fell in love with was The Swiss Family Robinson. I love the idea of treehouse living and making do off the land.
Describe your best kind of day.
My best days are spent anywhere in nature with family and friends.
What are your favorite accounts to follow on Instagram right now?
NatGeo photographer @PaulNicklen; @TheDodo for all things animals; @ __nitch for great portraits and quotes from celebrities and influencers; and @sarahsophief because she’s an activist and all around badass.
