Merry & Bright: Holiday Mantel Décor

December 15, 2016

With the hustle-bustle of trimming the tree and decking the halls, it’s easy to overlook decorating the mantel. But few things look as magically holiday as a festively adorned fireplace, with twinkling flames and parade of stockings. The mantel plays an important supporting role (it’s the grand entrance for you-know-who, after all!) and this season, we asked blogger Emily Brunotte of Champagne in the Rain for a little help elevating ours to star status. Read on for her step-by-step guide.

“First, you need a large statement piece that catches your eye and serves as the anchor and backdrop for the rest of the décor. Here, I used my favorite mirror.”
“Natural elements are key—think greenery, stones, pinecones and flowers. I found some gorgeous boxwood garland at our neighborhood nursery and added little pinecones for texture.”
“You want to incorporate color without being overwhelming. Here, I used both golds and silvers—don’t be afraid to mix metals! The combination of warm and cool makes for a very polished result.”
“Whether you use string lights, candles or a real fire, it’s nice to incorporate some kind of light. Our fireplace is decorative, so I added a few ivory pillar candles to both sides of the mirror.”
“Last but not least, decorating the fireplace is not just about the mantle itself—you also want add something interesting to the hearth. This vase adds great dimension without blocking the view of the fireplace.”
