24 Hours in Jaipur: A Shopping Guide

December 8, 2017

Most of us have a shoe rack. The lucky few, a shoe closet.
But Alana Oates? She has a shoe room.
“It’s true, it’s true,” she tells us with a laugh. “I probably have a little more than 300 pairs now.”

It’s a hazard of the job, we suppose. A former member of our Anthropologie shoe team, Alana launched her own collection, Llani, in 2016. Just in time for the holidays, she’s partnered with us for a new slipper collaboration, Llani x Anthropologie. Vibrant in color and beautifully detailed, each pair is handcrafted by artisans in Jaipur, India.

“I was drawn to Jaipur because of their history of artistry and handwork,” says Alana.  “There’s nowhere in the world that has the amazing level of skill and craftsmanship—it’s a shopping destination.”

We caught up with Alana just as she returned from a recent inspiration trip to Jaipur. Read on for her guide to the perfect shopping day in India’s famed Pink City.

Jaipur’s City Palace is a must-see. Built in the 1700s, it’s lavishly decorated with gilded entry gates and giant chandeliers, and houses a small collection of historical clothing worn by the palace’s royalty. Many of the motifs inspired the embellishments for our collection.

“You can’t miss the outdoor bazaars. The experience of meeting an artisan and seeing their craft being developed right in front of your eyes is so rare and unique to this part of the world.”

“This time, I made a special trip to Jaipur’s Gem Palace. They specialize in raw cut diamonds, also known as “polki” diamonds, but I was there to gawk at the stunning gems.”

“For a break from the heat, I love a mid-day meal at Rajmahal Palace. Owned by Jaipur’s royal family, it was recently restored and now serves as a hotel and spa right in the middle of the city. The staff will be happy to give you a tour of the property. I’m still dreaming about the custom wallpapers!”

“One of my favorite places to grab a drink in Jaipur is the Polo Lounge at Taj Rambagh Palace. Get yours to go and head out to the palace lawns and hang out with the peacocks.”

“Bar Palladio is a favorite for dinner—the décor is as amazing as the food. After dessert, stroll the nearby shops at Narain Niwas Palace.”
