Far & Away: Solo Travel Tips With Dame TravelerMay 22, 2017
“Where should we go?” So often, this is a question we pose to our friends, families and partners while planning a trip. But what if the only person you asked before booking a flight was you? As the globe-trotting founder of Dame Traveler, Nastasia Wong hopes to inspire women to get out there and explore on their own. Her solo adventures have taken her to all corners of the world, resulting in one of Instagram’s most breathtaking, enviable feeds.
Here, Nastasia shares her insights on traveling alone and making new friends along the way.
“My first solo adventure was when I was in nursing school, sitting in class wondering what to do during my month-long break. I impulsively booked a flight to South Africa so I could fulfill my dream of volunteering at an orphanage—I no longer wanted to waste time waiting for someone to join me, so I went alone. I lived in a house with 12 other volunteers from all over the world who instantly became my friends. You see, when you travel solo, you’re never actually alone.”
“As women, fear is constantly instilled in us. While risks do exist, it ultimately comes down to making bold, yet smart, decisions and taking that leap of faith. It’s important to follow your intuition when traveling solo—it will lead you down the right path.
“The time I’ve spent alone has taught me self-love. Solo travel heightens your senses to become more aware of your surroundings, as well as more aware of your own self.”
“Consider staying in social places like hostels to better position yourself to make friends, especially with other solo female travelers. Also, Instagram is a great place to meet other travelers.” (Pro tip: check out the #dametraveler community to find new like-minded friends!)
“If you’re considering a solo trip somewhere close to home, I’d choose Charleston, South Carolina or Newport, Rhode Island. I just came back from Charleston and absolutely loved it. For somewhere more exotic, my dream solo destination is Bhutan. I have yet to visit, but I plan on it.”
