Make It Happen: DIY Garlands

We’ve been busy decking the halls—or in our case, our stores—in garlands galore. Made from bottle caps and beads, this festive chain is easy-as-pie to make—lucky for us, our display director Erika is on hand to show us how. Once you’ve tried this one, give our magazine garlands a go.

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Bottle caps {about 100 caps for 1 strand}
Wooden oval and circular beads
Colored twine
Blue fabric dye
Flat latex white paint
Spray paint (assorted metallics)
Aluminum foil
Scissors
Paint brushes
Drill and metal drill bit

HOW TO MAKE IT

image

Drill a small hole in the center of each bottle cap.

White-wash a few wooden beads with a white paint and water mix. Mix in a watered-down blue fabric dye and dip wooden beads.

Using a blue twine and a thick embroidery needle, begin threading bottle caps. Secure each end of garland with a loop of twine—this will attach each strand to the tree. Feel free to play with bottle cap direction—the variance creates great texture.

Cut short lengths of waxed blue twine, and tie the twine around the garland strands in clusters, making a small knot at each end.
