Beauty & The Beach: Lou Taylor for The Artist’s StudioMay 9, 2016
What do Iris Apfel, Busby Berkeley and a cat named Phoebe have in common? They all inspire Brighton-based illustrator Lou Taylor, whose instantly iconic motifs bedeck our latest collection of tints and treatments from The Artist’s Studio. We know you’ll find her joyful designs—brought to life in a charming video—as delightful as the artist herself, who kindly chatted with us about artistic process, living by the coast and lazy summer days.
What’s your daily beauty ritual?
It depends—my studio is in my home, so sometimes it’s pretty minimal! I love rose-scented products, though, and I always moisturize. Especially important is a nourishing hand cream. I work with my hands and do a lot of gardening, so they need a lot of TLC.
Can you tell us a little bit about your artistic process?
A lot of it happens in my mind—I’m always planning and daydreaming. When I sit down to sketch, it’s pretty much a finished design. I create papercuts of my work first so I can play with patterns in real life as well as digitally.
What’s your studio like?
I’ve just moved, so it’s pretty chaotic at the moment! But there’s lots of color, postcards and images that inspire me, and a giant Iris Apfel brooch hanging on the wall—she’s my all-time favorite style icon and the brooch is one of my most popular products. My cat, Phoebe, likes to sit on the sunny windowsill in the afternoons and make sure I’m working.
We’ve heard that you’re inspired by Busby Berkeley choreography—which musical number is your favorite?
I love Carmen Miranda, the lady in the Tutti Frutti hat, in The Gang’s All Here. My illustration of her is part of my collection for The Artist’s Studio—she decorates the Tahitian Monoi Eau de Parfum.
Have you always wanted to be an illustrator?
My mum is a painter and has been a source of constant inspiration in my life. I think I’ve always had a paintbrush or pair of scissors in my hand. I took the plunge and went full-time four years ago, and I’ve never looked back!
Describe your ideal summer day.
Breakfast with my husband and cat in our garden, a wander through a flea market, lunch and a stroll in the afternoon by the sea. We live at the foot of the South Downs, surrounded by stunning countryside, so we often disappear for the day over the hills…and into a country pub.
