Like any holiday, the Fourth of July can be a bit predictable when it comes to the menu. While we’d never even think of complaining about burgers, this year, we wanted to bring something unexpected to the picnic table. So what’s cooking? Curried crab cake sandwiches topped with apple-celery slaw. The perfect blend of spicy and sweet, these crowd-pleasers are easy to make and even easier to love. (Pro tip: definitely count on seconds.)

For serving, make sure to have brioche buns, arugula, red onion, tomato and extra mayo on hand. And if you really want to impress, consider whipping up a batch of homemade potato chips—and inviting us over, of course.

Fourth of July Picnic Recipes: Crab Cakes

CURRIED CRAB CAKES
What You’ll Need
1 pound crabmeat
2 tablespoons cilantro, chopped
1 ½ tablespoons mint, chopped
½ cup mayonnaise
1 egg
1 cup breadcrumbs
3 tablespoons fresh corn kernels
Zest of one lemon
Salt and pepper, to taste

How To Make It
Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well. Make 8 patties, using ⅓ cup of the mixture for each. Heat a few tablespoons of oil in a large pan over medium heat and cook the crab cakes in batches for three minutes on each side, or until golden.

APPLE-CELERY SLAW
What You’ll Need
1 green apple, cut into matchsticks
1 cup red cabbage, shredded
1 stalk celery, thinly sliced
¼ cup mayonnaise
1 tablespoon lime juice
Zest of one lime
Salt and pepper, to taste

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
